Resident Evil 2 Remake Becomes the Best-Selling Game in the Franchise, Overtaking Resident Evil 7

Resident Evil by Capcom is a legendary horror video game series that has influenced the gaming industry and sold over 146 million units worldwide.

Capcom recently updated its sales data for 114 games that have reached ‘Platinum’ status over the years. The data reveals that the Resident Evil 2 Remake, released in 2019, has sold 12.6 million copies, becoming the best-selling game in the franchise. It beats Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which has sold 12.4 million copies since its release in 2017.

Why is it important?

The Resident Evil series dominates the top 10 entries on the list, with 6 positions, confirming its popularity as the company’s best-selling series. It also shows the potential of remakes, and Capcom is likely to continue making remakes of the Resident Evil series.

A possible factor that contributed to the increased sales of the Resident Evil 2 Remake was the offer of a free upgrade for next-gen consoles and an improved version for PC players in June 2022. This appealing move attracted new buyers who wanted to enjoy the enhanced gaming experience.

The success of Resident Evil 2 Remake propelled it to become the third highest-selling game in the history of the company. Only two other titles, Monster Hunter World with 19 million units, and Monster Hunter Rise with 13.2 million units sold have managed to surpass its impressive sales record.

When we look at other titles of the franchise, they fall far behind it. Resident Evil 5 and 6 have achieved sales rates of 8.8 million units each, while Resident Evil Village is following behind with 8.3 million units sold.

Remarkably, the Remake of Resident Evil 4 has also achieved great success, selling over 5 million units in four months. It is expected to surpass Resident Evil 2 Remake in the future.
